Senior Java Backend Engineer

About the role

This is our most frequently hired role. The majority of AlgoDomain's active engagements involve Java platform work — modernisation programmes, new microservices development, API layer builds, and event-driven integration. We're looking for engineers with strong Java production experience who can operate effectively in enterprise codebases and work comfortably alongside client engineering teams.

Seniority here means you can take a technical problem from discovery through design to delivery without needing significant supervision. You can reason about trade-offs, write code that others can understand and maintain, and raise risks clearly when you encounter them.

What you'll work on

  • Java 17+ application development using Spring Boot 3
  • Microservices design and implementation — including decomposing existing monolithic systems
  • API design, REST and messaging-based integration patterns
  • Event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka or cloud-native messaging
  • Database design and query optimisation in PostgreSQL or similar RDBMS
  • Deployment configuration for Kubernetes on AWS EKS or Azure AKS

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement backend services to the scope and quality standards of the engagement
  • Lead technical design within your work stream, documenting decisions for review
  • Conduct code reviews and mentor more junior engineers where present
  • Maintain comprehensive test coverage: unit, integration, and contract tests
  • Collaborate with client architects, product owners, and infrastructure teams
  • Participate in incident response and production support where required by the engagement

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional Java development experience
  • Deep familiarity with Spring Boot and the Spring ecosystem
  • Experience building and operating microservices in production
  • Strong understanding of SQL, database design, and ORM frameworks (JPA/Hibernate)
  • Hands-on experience with containerisation and Kubernetes
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and GitOps practices
  • Ability to write clear technical documentation and ADRs
  • Experience in at least one regulated or enterprise industry (financial services, healthcare, etc.)

Nice to have

  • Apache Kafka or event streaming experience
  • Experience with the strangler fig or other incremental migration patterns
  • AWS or Azure certification or demonstrable production experience
  • Security-conscious engineering: OWASP, secure coding practices
  • Kotlin familiarity
